The Name
Many people have asked me where froggLuver came from. I have been asked such things as, “Are you overly fond of French people?”, or “Did you grow up in a swamp?”
While I don’t really think the French enjoy being called frogs, I can see the humor. Nevertheless, that is not the source of the moniker. Moreover, the closest I have ever been to a swamp, was once when flying over New Jersey.
No, dear readers, the reason behind the soubriquet is much deeper and darker than that. Imagine if you will a small laboratory full of eager, young citizens craving the knowledge that the instructor allowed to leak from her aging, but sharp brain. One particular day, the smell of death wafted from the cracks in the door, and out into the hall surrounding the tiny facility. Inside the room, the lifeless carcasses of the amphibians in question spilled over the edges of a large foam container as if they were trying to make one last attempt to return to the waterways they loved so well.
There are no words within my grasp that could have described the antipathy and complete revulsion I felt at the idea of cutting open any creature to see what was inside. Why should this frog sacrifice its life so that I could see where its peritoneal membrane connects to its kidneys?
At that point, I refused to take part in this exercise. My classmates began calling me the “Frog Lover”. Reflecting a trait most post-pubescent associates with a low self-esteem have. Over the years, those bullies turned to friends, but the nickname remained. People began giving me frog-related birthday gifts, Christmas cards and Easter baskets. My collection began to grow, so I embraced it. I did kind of like frogs, so it wasn't’t a big stretch.
Many years later, trying to fill the space at the top of my web page, representing my budding desire to be a web designer, I took this thread from the quilt of my life and reused it to stitch the hole. I needed something unique, and since this represented one of my many convictions, I just changed around the letters and viola! froggLuver was born.
